SCOTTSBORO, Ala. – East Mississippi Community College's Miles Respess sits in a 19th-place tie following Tuesday's opening-round, even-par 72 at the 2013 NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship being played at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course.
Respess, a sophomore from Paragould, Ark., is tied with 10 other individuals in 19th place among the 122-player field. His even-par score ranks third among the 10 MACJC players competing in this week's four-day tournament. Copiah-Lincoln Community College's Corbin May, this year's NJCAA Region 23 and MACJC State Championship medalist, fired a 3-under-par 69 to stand in a three-way tie for the runner-up spot behind first-round leader David Keenan of Parkland (Ill.) College.
Pacing the six-time reigning NJCAA Region 23 golf champions of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is MACJC first-team all-state recipient Jake Pritchard, whose 2-under-par 70 has him tied with five other golfers for fifth place. As a team, the MGCCC Bulldogs enter Wednesday's second round in third place (291) behind Black Hawk (Ill.) College (285) and reigning national champion South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College (284).
Other MACJC golfers finishing Tuesday's opening round among the top 40 were MGCCC's Hayes Weathersby (t-19th) along with Bulldog teammate Adam Ham and Northwest Mississippi's Chad Cupples, who were tied with seven other players for 30th place after carding identical 1-over-par rounds of 73.
Second-round tee times begin at 7 a.m. Wednesday and continue through the final group teeing off at 1 p.m. EMCC's Respess is slated for a 12:06 p.m. tee time.
With a four-star rating by Golf Digest magazine, Goose Pond Colony is a George Cobb-designed course that sits on the banks of the Tennessee River's Lake Guntersville and nestled into the Cumberland Mountains. The par-72 layout is playing 7,145 yards to a rating of 73.1, slope 129.
