David Boykin joins Buddy Stephens’ EMCC football coaching staff as offensive coordinator
With nearly two decades of coaching experience working with some of Mississippi’s most successful high school football programs, David Boykin has been hired as East Mississippi Community College’s offensive coordinator. The hiring was announced this week by 10th-year EMCC head football coach Buddy Stephens.
Boykin comes to the three-time NJCAA champion EMCC Lions after spending the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Starkville High School under the guidance of head coaches Jamie Mitchell and Ricky Woods. The Yellow Jackets compiled a three-year record of 34-6, including claiming the 2015 Class 6A state championship with a 14-1 mark after advancing to the state semifinals the year prior with a 13-1 record. In addition to ranking among the nation's Top 20 teams during those back-to-back seasons as 6A District II champions, the Jackets averaged 37.8 and 34.3 points per game in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
"I am very excited about joining Coach (Buddy) Stephens' staff here at EMCC," Boykin said. "I'm blessed and proud to be associated with such a championship program, and I look forward to helping the Lions continue that success for years to come."
Prior to Starkville, Boykin enjoyed previous success during a four-year stint as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for M.C. Miller at Louisville High School. Capped by an undefeated 2013 campaign in which the 16-0 Wildcats averaged nearly 40 points per contest en route to winning the Class 3A state title, Louisville went 46-12 between the 2010 and 2013 seasons.
Having gained valuable head coaching experience at Caledonia High School for three seasons (2006-07 & '09), Boykin spent the 2008 campaign in the collegiate ranks coaching tight ends at the University of North Alabama under the direction of current Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Mark Hudspeth. The 12-2 UNA Lions advanced to the NCAA Division II national semifinals prior to Boykin returning to the high school coaching ranks at Caledonia the following year.
Boykin's initial coaching experience within the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) took place under Miller's direction at Noxubee County High School. Beginning in 2003, the Tigers posted a three-year composite mark of 28-10 and advanced to the Class 4A state playoffs all three seasons.
A native of Noxubee County, Boykin kicked off his coaching career at his alma mater, Macon's Central Academy.
No stranger to the Scooba campus, Boykin pitched for the EMCC Lions during the 1990 and 1991 baseball seasons. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University before completing his master's degree in educational leadership from the Mississippi University for Women.
Boykin is married to the former Nina Studdard, of Macon, and they have three children – daughters, Codye (Estes) and Connor, and son, Sy Hunter. They also have one grandson, Aubrey Estes.
