Led by championship-round appearances from barrel racer Jaylie Matthews and breakaway roper Blair Bryant, the East Mississippi Community College women’s rodeo team earned a program-best, fourth-place team finish at this year’s College National Finals Rodeo. The week-long National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event concluded with Saturday night’s finals held at the Ford Wyoming Center.
As team champions of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s (NIRA) Ozark Region for the first time in school history, four members of the East Mississippi Community College women’s rodeo team, plus four individual members from the EMCC men’s team, are set to represent the Lions in the upcoming College National Finals Rodeo, June 13-19, in Casper, Wyoming. EMCC’s school-record total of eight CNFR participants will compete for individual event championships during the week-long event to take place at the Ford Wyoming Center.
The East Mississippi Community College women’s rodeo team has made program history by claiming this year’s National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Ozark Region team title. The school-first regional team championship earns the EMCC women an appearance in this summer’s (June 13-19) College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming.
In the second rodeo of the spring season, East Mississippi Community College placed fourth in men’s action and tied for sixth on the women’s side during last weekend’s event hosted by Pearl River Community College. The three-day rodeo concluded Saturday night at the Pearl River County Fairgrounds Arena.
In earning the top two individual finishes in barrel racing and breakaway roping, the East Mississippi Community College women’s rodeo team set a program record by totaling 475 team points in claiming the women’s team title of the Southern Arkansas University College Rodeo this past weekend. The EMCC men finished in fifth place at the three-day event held at Story Arena in Magnolia, Arkansas.
The East Mississippi Community College rodeo teams claimed three individual event titles during this past weekend’s UWA College Rodeo Showdown, while earning a second straight third-place men’s team finish and placing fourth in the women’s competition. The three-day rodeo hosted by the University of West Alabama concluded Saturday night at Meridian’s Lauderdale County Agri-Center.
East Mississippi Community College’s 2020-21 sports season looks to officially get underway this week (Sept. 17-19) as the EMCC men’s and women’s rodeo teams are scheduled to open the fall portion of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Ozark Region schedule in Missouri.
