SCOOBA – In their second softball doubleheader sweep of the season, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College claimed a pair of 11-1 run-rule home wins over Missouri-based Moberly Area Community College during Tuesday's non-conference action played at the EMCC Softball Field.
While combining to collect 21 total hits, including five home runs, in the two games, EMCC scored at least one run during all eight team plate appearances on the afternoon. Within the circle, four Lions pitchers collectively allowed only five hits by MACC – all singles – during the day.
In the opening contest, EMCC sent 11 batters to the plate during an eight-run first inning that featured a three-run home run by Madison Newburn, a two-run triple by RaMiyah Price and a two-run homer by Devin Bourgeois.
The Lions then tallied a single run during each of their three remaining at-bats in the five-inning contest, capped by Savannah Fralix's solo home run in the fourth inning.
The visiting Greyhounds pushed across an unearned run in the second inning off EMCC starting pitcher Chaley Peterson. The Hancock High School product allowed singles in the first and third innings, with three strikeouts and a pair of walks, over four innings to record her first collegiate win. Liberty Brown pitched the fifth inning and retired the side in order.
Bourgeois and Fralix led EMCC's 10-hit team effort in the opening game with two hits apiece.
In the second game, the Lions' 11 runs were more evenly spaced out with three runs in the first inning, two scores during the second and third frames, and the final four runs coming in the fourth inning.
Following a sacrifice fly by Newburn in the first inning of the nightcap, Fralix hit her second home run of the day and team-leading fourth homer of the season. After EMCC tallied two runs apiece in the second and third frames, Price's three-run blast – her first of the season – and Raven Ramsey's run-scoring triple capped the day's scoring for the home-standing Lions.
Moberly Area managed to plate an unearned run in the third inning on Sydney Appleberry's sacrifice fly.
The Lions had four players with multi-hit outings in the nightcap, highlighted by Ramsey's 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Prior to her RBI triple, the Northeast Lauderdale High School product had singles in her first two at-bats in which she then stole second base and came around to score during the second and third innings.
Bourgeois and Fralix both had two more hits in the second game, as did Price, to contribute to EMCC's 11-hit team outing.
EMCC sophomore pitcher Allee Bennett, a product of Biloxi's St. Patrick Catholic High School, evened her season pitching record at 2-2 while only allowing a leadoff single in the second inning and an unearned run a frame later. Savannah Mitchell pitched the fifth inning of the second game for the Lions.
Currently in the midst of a two-week softball home stand, head coach Mackenzie Byrd's 5-5 EMCC Lions will play host to Coastal Alabama-North in a Thursday (Feb. 19) doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. start on the Scooba campus.
