SCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College men's soccer team posted a second straight one-goal decision by dropping hard-fought 3-2 home decision to Southwest Mississippi during Tuesday's MACCC action played at EMCC's Sullivan-Windham Field.
Coming off last week's tough 1-0 home setback to Copiah-Lincoln in a defensive battle, the EMCC men surrendered a pair of goals in the opening half against Southwest. Max Ruelke scored during the sixth minute of play followed later in the half by Ilan Marin's goal in the 20th minute.
Following intermission, the home-standing Lions came to life with an offensive surge that netted a pair of goals within a minute of one another to knot the score at 2-2. Daniel Abreu (Gijon, Spain) notched his team-leading fourth assist of the year by crossing to Southwest transfer Michael Godshaw (Vicksburg, MS/Warren Central HS) for his third goal of the season to get EMCC on the board in the 48th minute. Just over a minute later, freshman Matthew Halliday (Liverpool, England) successfully converted a penalty kick to tie the match at 2-2 with his first collegiate goal.
The visiting Bears rallied to net the decisive goal in the game's 80th minute on Dews Jussely's go-ahead tally and eventual game-winner.
Four of EMCC's eight decisions on the season have been decided by just one goal.
In women's action on Tuesday, EMCC fell, 7-1, to the Southwest Lady Bears. After SMCC jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead, EMCC freshman Bella Miller (Meridian, MS/Lamar School) scored her team-leading second goal of the season on a cross from fellow freshman Anna Riley Kelly (Yazoo City, MS/Manchester Academy) in the 54th minute.
Coach Chris Rash's East Mississippi soccer teams will hit the road to take on the Hinds Eagles in conference action Friday (Sept. 26) in Raymond before stepping out of league play Monday (Sept. 29) to host the University of Mobile Reserve team in women's action (2 p.m.) and Southern Union State CC in men's action (4 p.m.) on the Scooba campus.
